A Small Homestead

Welcome to my blog about our adventures on and away from our modest family homestead. We are a young family trying to raise as much of our own food as possible and still enjoy life while holding down full time jobs and work two small home based businesses. Life can get hectic and challenging but at the end of the day we have most importantly each other, good food on our table and a roof over our heads.

Welcome to our Growing Farm!

Welcome to our Growing Farm!

That could, and does, mean two different things. We are growing as much of our own food as possible and our Farm is constantly growing OR expanding as we add new items to our home grown menu.

This year we are growing our own meat chickens again.  We tried our hand at it last year with just a few.  I was unsure if I could eat a chicken we raised ourselves but it hasn't been an issue.  In fact, now I find it difficult to eat a chicken not raised by ourselves, it just does not taste the same! This spring we are starting with 24, we eat a lot of chicken, and will probably get more in the fall to keep our supply of chicken in the freezer going until next spring.

We considered raising pigs but we have put that on hold until next year.  We have yet to finish our larger coop to house the meat chickens so we have enough on our hands to finish this year.

Last year we planted high bush blueberry bushes, the early plants are loaded with blossoms.  We have also planted Haskap bushes, which seem to be all the rage this year.  Ron just found them interesting when he looked at them last spring, we had no idea they were the "next super food" craze.  We have also added a bed of strawberry plants this year.

Thanks for visiting!  I am new to blogging so please bare with me, I'm learning as I go.
